Land Your Dream Job: A Step-by-Step Interview Preparation Framework

1) LOOK OVER YOUR RESUME & COVER LETTER

  • Be prepared to speak on every detail.

  • Remember to put each detail from your resume in your own words when you’re speaking; don’t make it sound like you just memorized what you wrote.

2) GENERAL QUESTIONS TO BE PREPARED TO ANSWER

Depending on the position you’re applying for, be prepared to answer technical questions specific to your specialty field. But even if these questions below don’t get asked, the person interviewing you still wants to hear the answers somewhere during the interview. (It might help to be prepared with a quick story about yourself that shows how perseverant, intelligent, etc. you are, as well as answer the question you’ve been asked.

  • What does this company specialize in?

  • What can you contribute to this company?

  • What makes you different from all the other applicants we have?

  • How did you find out about this job?

  • What’s your ultimate goal?

3) ALWAYS HAVE QUESTIONS TO ASK THEM

Of all the other people going for the same position as you, at least someone will have some good questions. You’re better than that person, prove it by showing you’re more interested in the job.

  • Go on the company website before the interview and look at the ‘Current Events’ or ‘News’ tab; make questions based on what is currently going on in the company.

  • Ask questions that are worded in a way that once the interviewer’s done speaking, you can respond to their answer by talking about your good qualities.

  • Examples: “What qualities would the ideal candidate for this position possess?” “What are the pros and cons of working here?” “Are there significant opportunities for advancement here?”

  • Remember Make sure the interview flows like a conversation; avoid pauses by further speaking on the question you were just asked, ask one of your own, or maybe bring up an appropriate article that you recently read in the news.

4) RELAX

  • Even if you’re nervous, you need to go into this interview seeming confident that you are the best candidate to be interviewed.

  • Remember - You may have to step out of your comfort zone to do well in this interview, but it’s better to do that than to be without a job.
